A Method for Defining Competency-Based Promotion Criteria for Family Medicine

Laura Torbeck and Alan Wrightson.

Academic Medicine
September 2005, Vol. 80, Issue #9, pg. 832-839.

Review by: Linda Heun, Ph.D. <lheun@aacom.org>

The authors describe the process and their outcomes for the development of competency-based promotion criteria for family medicine residents. The process began with a literature search for studies identifying standards, a review of Residency Assistance Program workshop of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and a review of the family medicine curriculum at the University of Kentucky. Next time was used at an annual faculty retreat to present the working list of promotion criteria, discuss with and receive feedback from faculty. Accommodating faculty suggestions, labels were developed for each ACGME competency and subcompetency. Tools were developed to address the competencies, including a web-based competency-based faculty evaluation, a resident portfolio and multisource feedback instruments. All information was integrated into a matrix, including the method of instruction and evaluation and the setting for easy.

A later version of the complete matrix is included in the article.
