Ethics, The Constitution, and The Dying Process: The Cause of Theresa Marie Schiavo

Lawrence Gostin.

Journal of the American Medical Association
May 18, 2005, Vol. 293, Issue #19, pg. 2403-2407.

Review by: Linda Heun, Ph.D. <lheun@aacom.org>

The author reviews the facts and judicial history of this case and then examines the following issues 1) the lack of factual and medical clarity, 2) withdrawal of hydration and nutrition, 3) level of appropriate decision making, and 4) implications for vulnerable populations - the elderly and disabled, and poor.

This is an excellent article to promote discussion in medical education contexts.
