The authors provide detailed information about the development, implementation and evaluation of a faculty development program to support the teaching and evaluation of professionalism. They deal with the challenges of focusing on non-clinical content that many faculty and students believe cannot or need not be taught. They also discuss the rationale and strategies for implementing the following guiding principles for the program: 1) transmission of core knowledge, 2) translation of content into practice to create effective role models, 3) a focus on teaching and evaluation, and 4) the promotion of consensus and buy-in.
