Making Sense of Qualitative Research: Explanations in Consultations: The Combined Effectiveness of Doctors' and Nurses' Communication With Patients

Sarah Collins.

Medical Education
August 2005, Vol. 39, Issue #8, pg. 785-796.

Review by: Linda Heun, Ph.D. <lheun@aacom.org>

The author provides a research-based approach to a key issue in the promotion of multidisciplinary health care: qualitative understanding of the differences in the communication of different health care providers. Distinctive features of explanations of nurses' and doctors' consultations with patients were identified through the qualitative analysis of video and audio taped consultations with patients. The author posits that recognition of the distinct contributions of varying professionals has implications for policy, practice and interprofessional education.
