Continuing Medical Education, Quality Improvement, and Organizational Change: Implications of Recent Theories for Twenty-First-Century CME

David Price.

Medical Teacher
May 2005, Vol. 27, Issue #3, pg. 259-268.

Review by: Linda Heun, Ph.D. <lheun@aacom.org>

The author argues that CME programs become more effective as they are linked to multifaceted interventions involving organizational change, quality improvement and diffusion of innovation. To visualize this linkage he parallels the steps in the CME process with the 'Plan-Do-Study-Act' approach to quality improvement. He also provides questions to use in each phase of the CME process to maximize the outcome of 'transfer of practice'. He concludes that CME providers can, and should, become a facilitator of organizational improvement through their educational programs.
