Interprofessional Skills Development

Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC)

AACOM is a partner in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC). This group of six health professions education associations has worked on several projects together and are planning further activities to make interprofessional health care teams a highly functioning reality.

In February 2012, IPEC released an announcement of its formal organization.

IPEC Call for Interprofessional Submissions - NEW!

The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, as a partner in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), announces a call for submissions for competency-based learning and assessment resources, in support of the IPEC Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice report. Funded in part by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, this initiative is designed to create a national clearinghouse of competency-linked learning resources for interprofessional education and models of team-based or collaborative care.

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has been awarded funding by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation to launch an interprofessional education portal in support of the IPEC report: Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice. With guidance from the IPEC-MedEdPORTAL Advisory Committee, AAMC will select up to fifteen (15) applicants for resource development awards of $2,000 to accelerate content refinement in preparation for formal submission and peer-review to MedEdPORTAL. Award application deadline is Friday, May 25, 2012 at 5p (EDT) with applicants notified of funding decisions by June 18, 2012.

Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Institute

AACOM, as a member of IPEC, is co-sponsoring an Institute on May 21-23, 2012 to bring interprofessional teams from health care education programs together to learn from leaders in interprofessional health care education and develop a plan to implement at their institution.  Each team will include 3-5 individuals, each from a different health care profession - one of which must be from one of the six sponsoring IPEC organization's schools (AACP, AACN, AACOM, ADEA, AAMC, ASPH).  Programming will be anchored in the IPEC publication "Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice".

Registration filled quickly!  Look for news about additional interprofessional institutes in 2012 and 2013.  Questions? Please e-mail institute@aacp.org.

IPE on Campuses

For an example of how osteopathic medical schools are implementing interprofessional education on their campuses, see:

Western University of Health Sciences Interprofessional Education (IPE) Program

Western University of Health Sciences’ IPE program helps students from nine distinct health professions learn how to work as a cohesive health care team. This is a required, comprehensive program for all health professions students from the university’s nine health care disciplines: medicine, optometry, dental medicine, podiatric medicine, veterinary medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, nursing and pharmacy. The interprofessional curriculum is threaded and integrated into the respective professional programs and includes such activities as IPE clinical scenarios with the university’s standardized patients (SP) program; IPE team-based patient safety and disaster management activities; patient care experiences at the Interprofessional Diagnostic Suites in the school’s new on-campus Patient Care Center; and documentation of IPE experiences at outside clinical rotations.
