SIG Mission Statement:
To share information about the patient simulation field, i.e. the use of live, robotic and computer simulations to train and assess the clinical skills of medical students and physicians. The main goals are to:
- Increase collaboration between the osteopathic schools regarding the use of simulations (standardized patients, robotics, virtual reality, etc). For teaching an assessment of clinical skills
- Provide a centralized location for the sharing and distribution of relevant ideas, materials and methods
- Involve faculty and non-faculty (e.g. standardized patient trainers and administrators) in the collaborative process
- Enable schools to prepare their students for the COMLEX-USA-Level 2-PE
Within the above mission, what specific objectives can best be accomplished by collaborative efforts:
- Sharing of information, e.g.
- Standardized patient cases and skills checklists
- Standardized patient training methods and materials
- Program design and development
- Formative assessment – how do the schools use simulations for feedback to students and faculty?
- Summative assessment – what are OSCEs and how is a test constructed?
- Data analysis
- Using robotic simulators
- What models are available
- Advantages and disadvantages to the various models
- Using simulators to teach and assess skills
- Faculty development: Issues and requirements, e.g.
- What faculty and deans need to know about patient simulations and their use
- Constructing a simulation lab:
- Needs assessment: How does a school figure out what it needs?
- Physical plant
- Hardware and software
- Staffing
- Validating exam instruments
Specific goals to be accomplished:
- Compile a list of the individuals (faculty and staff) involved in patient simulations
- (to be further developed)
