Global Health Committee Update
September 16, 2013 by Global Health Representative
I hope you are getting excited for our meeting in Las Vegas! The global health committee has been working hard between our meetings and we have begun reaching out to schools to collect cultural information for AACOM International Collaborative. Your help is essential to this process so please encourage your schools and respective global health leaders to participate. I realize many schools have a lot of different countries where students rotate, so splitting up the work and working on it throughout the year is a great way to break the task down. Thank you for all your help in advance.
In addition, I and the SOMA Global Health Representative will be hosting a workshop at OMED called Climate Change and Global Health. We have been working hard on this and are excited to have an interactive hour where we can share ideas and information. Please come ready to participate!
During OMED, the global health committee will be taking turns rotating out of the meeting to attend events hosted by BIOM and DOCARE. If you would like updates on these events, please e-mail me and we will add you to our e-mail list.
Welcome from the Global Health Committee!

Thank you to my Global Health Committee for a wonderful meeting at the AOA House of Delegates! We are so excited for our upcoming project with AACOM International Collaborative. The overall goal is to provide a basic cultural resource for those providing osteopathic medical care globally. If your school has cultural information to share at the sites where you provide clerkships, please provide that information. Currently, we are collecting any information that students have about the country they rotated in so that we can put it all together in a comprehensive website for AACOM IC. If you have any information about the following topics please contact email@example.com
- Traditional healing beliefs or customs particular to a region
- Cultural acceptance of osteopathic manipulation at the site
- Information regarding the demographic statistics of a region
- Language etiquette
- Nonverbal cues
- body language
- appropriate dress/attire for the country
- eye contact
- Treatment restrictions
- Family and gender roles
- Ecology of the site (do they have clean water, amount of time traveled to get to the clinic site, food security)
- Current health landscape (pandemics/epidemics/outbreaks/unique microbiology)
- Vaccine checklist resource link
- Current health care access and contacts
- Beliefs about death/dying
- How to identify/treat culture shock
- Political climate (link to state department website)
Also, encourage students to participate in the BIOMEA Poster Competition and Seminar on Monday, September 30th during OMED in Las Vegas!
The International Seminar is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about how to get involved humanitarian medicine worldwide. The poster competition is focused on international research and outreach experiences of osteopathic students and physicians. Any student may submit an abstract but the competition is only open to SOMA members. Abstract deadline is Friday, August 23rd.
