A Look at Diversity in OME

diversity-hires - CopyAACOM Research recently released an updated version of the Diversity in Osteopathic Medical School Applicants, Matriculants, and Enrollment report.

The report uses data from the AACOMAS application, along with information from the U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs), to display trends in gender and race/ethnicity from 2009 to the current academic year.

Overall, the number and proportion of underrepresented minority (URM) applicants and first-year enrollees to COMs is increasing. Despite the increase in URM applicants, total URM enrollment remains relatively stagnant. The new report also highlights the following trends: 

  • The percentage of URMs applying to an osteopathic medical school has increased by 3.9% since 2009
  • The percentage of female URM applicants has increased by 2% and male URM applicants increased by 1.9%

As part of its strategic plan, AACOM established a Diversity Committee in 2015 with the goal of developing underrepresented minority interest in pursuing a career in osteopathic medicine, increasing the diversity of applicants to the nation’s colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs), and sharing resources to support prospective and current minority DO students as they navigate through medical school. The Diversity Committee consists of select AACOM staff members and appointed representatives from the nation’s COMs. Learn more about how AACOM is supporting diversity in OME.
