More ACGME Review Committees to Accept AOA Board Certifications for Program Directors
(May 2015) Several ACGME Review Committees have determined that they will accept AOA certification as meeting the board certification requirements to serve as a program director of osteopathic programs seeking ACGME accreditation. This means that an AOA-certified program director may serve without an ABMS member board certified co-program director. However, all other qualification requirements must still be met. The following ACGME Review Committees have made this decision:
- Diagnostic Radiology
- Emergency Medicine
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
- Preventive Medicine
- Family Medicine
- Internal Medicine
Osteopathic Recognition & Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Applications Now Available
The ACGME Osteopathic Principles Committee (OPC) and the Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Review Committee (ONMM RC) finalized the application forms to be used by programs. The application forms are available on the OPC’s web page and the ONMM web page. Programs can submit applications beginning July 1, 2015.
Frequently Asked Questions Now Available
Both the OPC and the Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Review Committee (ONMM RC) released “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQs) which provide further explanation on their respective program requirements. See OPC FAQs and ONMM RC FAQs.
Proposed Focused Revision to ONMM Requirements
The ONMM RC finalized focused revisions to its requirements that create a pathway for current AOA-accredited neuromusculoskeletal medicine “Plus One” programs to seek ACGME accreditation as ONMM residency programs, allowing advanced entry into the final year of the program. The ONMM RC also has focused revisions that require residents to regularly log cases through ACGME’s Case Log System.
The focused revisions were posted on April 16, 2015 for a 45 day comment period to allow the community of interest to respond to these revisions. Those wishing to comment should utilize the “Review and Comment” form found on ACGME’s webpage and submit the completed form via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org by June 3, 2015. Institutions in Pre-Accreditation & Initial Accreditation Status
The application process for ACGME institutional sponsorship began on April 1, 2015. Institutions that submit a completed institutional application will receive “pre-accreditation status” and its AOA-accredited programs can begin the application process for Initial Accreditation with the ACGME. Programs can begin submitting their applications for ACGME Initial Accreditation on July 1, 2015. Institutions with pre-accreditation status will be identified on ACGME’s website. Those interested can now search for institutions by accreditation status and by state.
Six institutions have already achieved ACGME initial accreditation, those that achieve initial accreditation will also be identified and can be searched under the “Future Accredited” filter on ACGME’s ADS public site.
AACOM Hosts Webinar for Faculty Advisors on Single GME
On Monday, April 13, 2015, AACOM hosted a webinar featuring speakers from ACGME designed to inform faculty advisors about the transition to the single graduate medical education (GME) accreditation system. This webinar was focused on what faculty advisors and students should know about transitional year programs and traditional rotating internships during the transition to the new GME accrediting system.
Featured speakers included:
- Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, President & CEO, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine
- Louis J. Ling, MD, Senior Vice President for Hospital-based Accreditation, ACGME
- Anne Gravel Sullivan, PhD, Executive Director for Transitional Year and Anesthesiology Review Committees, ACGME

ACGME Specialty-Specific Webinars
ACGME launched a series of webinars for osteopathic programs and institutions transitioning into the single accreditation system. The webinars are specialty-specific and feature Senior Vice Presidents for Accreditation, ACGME Executive Directors and Review Committee Chairs. The schedule for the remaining webinars, presentations and webinar recordings are available on the AOA’s website. These webinars will also be posted on the ACGME’s webinars web page within three weeks and will be available for three months. Registration is suggested for, but not restricted to, program directors in the specialty, designated institutional officials (DIOs) and others assisting in the application process.
AACOM & AODME Joint Conference Offers Resources on Single GME
During the annual conference held April 22-25, 2015 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, attendees participated in a plethora of offerings specific to updates and information on the transition to the single GME accreditation system. Among these were:
- One-on-One informational sessions with ACGME Review Committee Executive Directors
- A Deep Dive session featuring leadership from ACGME
- A walk-in technical support session on the ACGME’s application process and the accreditation data system
All offerings were well attended and provided participants with timely and important information.
