(June 2015) An ACGME Common Program Requirement (II.A.3.b) is that, “Qualifications of the program director must include current certification in the specialty by the American Board of _____, or specialty qualifications that are acceptable to the Review Committee.”
The ACGME Review Committees for Allergy and Immunology, Anesthesiology, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, and Orthopaedic Surgery have recently voted to accept AOA certification as acceptable specialty qualifications for program directors. The Review Committees for Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Preventive Medicine, Dermatology, Diagnostic Radiology, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine have previously made similar decisions. Thus, in those specialties, an AOA-certified program director could serve without a co-program director certified by an ABMS member board. These decisions continue to build on the positive momentum in the implementation of the single graduate medical education accreditation system.
It is important to note that many RCs have other requirements for the program director position in addition to certification. Those additional requirements may be published in the Program Requirements, FAQs from the RC (which can be found on the RC webpage), or both. As is currently the case, all program director appointments must be reviewed and approved by the RC.
