New and Noteworthy: AACOM Publishes Latest Research on Student Performance

AACOM recently released six updated reports on performance evaluation methods, international opportunities, and clinical science instruction requirements, which allow for comparison of college of osteopathic medicine (COM) curriculum data.

  • 2015-16 Osteopathic Medical College Student Performance Evaluation Methods

Comparison data for evaluation methods (pass/fail, narrative, letter grade, numerical grade, and composite class rank by year) used by COMs for basic science and other pre-clerkship courses, required clinical clerkships, and elective/selective courses.

  • 2015-16 Contact Hours of Required Clinical Science Instruction by Osteopathic Medical College

Provides comparison of two categories of activities: lecture/didactic/group learning hours, and skills training/practice/lab hours required by COMs for both individual clinical science courses, as well as total clinical sciences.

Reports show a subtle 2.8 percent increase in COM average for total lecture/didactic/group learning hours from 2014-15 to 2015-16. The COM average for total skills training/practice/lab hours also increased by 10 percent from 2014-15 to 2015-16.

  • 2014-15 International Opportunities by Osteopathic Medical College

Half of all osteopathic medical schools offered organized international clerkship programs, and almost all COMs offered other international clerkship opportunities for both 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. Student participation in both programs was highest at MSUCOM, RVUCOM, and VCOM-VC. In addition, about 46 percent of COMs offered college-sponsored other international learning opportunities for both academic years.
