Through HPW's week of engaging events, prospective students explored the spectrum of available medical and health care career pathways, learned more about specific health education programs, and talked directly with current health care practitioners.

AACOM Expands Outreach

This year over 6,300 aspiring health care professionals registered for HPW, an increase of over 2,000 students from the inaugural event in 2016. Of the event’s 6,300 registrants, HPW attracted 2,866 high school student participants, reinforcing AACOM’s recruitment strategy to target prospective students earlier to expand the OME pipeline. About nine percent of all HPW registrants expressed an interest in osteopathic medicine!

AACOM successfully conducted its second virtual fair, during which the Association and college of osteopathic medicine (COM) faculty, staff, and students chatted online with nearly 260 high school and college students about a career in osteopathic medicine. AACOM ranked first among all participating organizations in the number of messages sent during the virtual fair and second in the number of chat room visitors.

Social Media Spotlight

AACOM’s recruitment initiatives also incorporate an active social media presence. HPW was promoted on AACOM’s primary twitter handles—@AACOMmunities and @AACOMASPreMed—and through AACOM’s newly launched Instagram. Using the hashtag #HPW2017, AACOM reached a total audience of 47,452 with 933 engagements on Twitter, and around 7,500 views on Instagram. AACOM effectively engaged U.S. COMs, student organizations, and stakeholders who interface with those entering medical school or considering a future in the health professions.

AACOM also premiered five new short YouTube videos as part of HPW’s ‘A Day in the Life' event. These videos garnered nearly 400 views and covered topics ranging from advice to medical school applicants to why current students and practitioners chose the DO path. Watch and share them on the official HPW Youtube channel.

Community Connection

Eleven COMs hosted 15 events during Community Connect Day where students could attend an in-person event at a local school to learn more about osteopathic medical education and osteopathic career possibilities.

Interprofessional Collaboration

AACOM’s collaborative efforts during HPW reinforces the Association’s goal to develop strong and productive relationships with other national health professions education organizations and associations, undergraduate advisors, high school guidance counselors, and other education professionals to inform them of the career opportunities in osteopathic medicine.

HPW was a joint effort among 21 health organizations. Sponsors included Liaison International, SallieMae, the U.S. Army, Kaplan, the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP), and Jones & Bartlett Publishers.
