Building Blocks for IPE

In response to the critical issues facing the country’s health care system, professionals from throughout the medical education continuum continue to collaborate on innovative changes across many dimensions of health professions education. These changes aim to transform U.S. health care into a system that is patient-centered, team-based, and prevention-focused through the implementation of interprofessional education (IPE).

Milestones and New Membership

Created to formalize leadership around national initiatives to advance interprofessional learning experiences and promoting team-based care, the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) has made substantive headway in IPE and forged partnerships that are crucial to further progress, such as:

  • Meaningful interprofessional learning experiences in the required curriculum has increased (as reported in JAMA and the Journal of Dental Education)
  • The MedEdPORTAL, an innovative online collection of peer-reviewed educational resources and competency-based learning modules to support IPE instruction, was launched in December 2012
  • In an effort to strengthen ties across the health professions and better serve the public good, in 2014 six of the nation’s leading accrediting agencies announced the formation of the Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative (HPAC). HPAC is now discussing next steps to expand membership.
  • This year IPEC approved nine additional members, through a new institutional membership category, expanding its representation of associations of schools of the health professions to 15
  • Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice: 2016 Update
  • IPEC Institutes have hosted 339 multi-professional teams with 1,457 participants to design institutionally-based projects that advance IPE at their local institutions

Fall Faculty Development Institute

IPEC held its annual Fall Institute October 5-7 in Herndon, VA. Under the title, Interprofessional Education: Building a Framework for Collaboration, the 2016 Fall IPEC Institute provided a format for participants to engage with national leaders in acquiring the building blocks for IPE.

The Fall Institute offered 124 post-baccalaureate health professions faculty and their IPE colleagues, making up 27 interprofessional teams, both quality time and dedicated space for guided learning, team-based planning activities, and consultation with experts and peers in order to emerge with a programmatic action plan for IPE.

The Fall IPEC agenda included a series of theory bursts to guide faculty teams in developing a plan for implementing IPE, tailored to their respective COMs. 

IPEC_Save The Date

IPEC invites all interested health professions faculty and clinical partners to attend two upcoming 2017 faculty development institutes. The Spring 2017 IPEC Institute is returning with the popular theme of building a framework for IPE, and will take place May 3-5, 2017, in Washington, DC. The Fall 2017 IPEC Institute will focus on a special IPE topic and will be held in Long Beach, CA from October 18 to 20, 2017.
