Pikeville College to Become University of Pikeville

Pikeville College has announced that the school will become the University of Pikeville effective July 1, 2011. The change comes as a result of the school adding a Master of Business Administration program, making the school, by definition, a university. A Long Range Planning Committee of faculty, students, trustees, administrators and alumni worked with a consulting firm to identify the long-term strategic vision of the institution. The college established a website for name suggestions, and the committee used public forums, polls and interviews to determine constituents’ opinions on potential names. “Next, we’ll be looking at the organization, mission and the needs of the region,” said Pikeville College President Paul Patton. “Pikeville College has the potential to become the leading institution of postsecondary education in Central Appalachia within 10 years.”
