Profiling the 2010 Entering Class of Osteopathic Medical Students

The nation’s colleges of osteopathic medicine report a total of 5,233 fall 2010 matriculants, up 3.5 percent from 5,054 individuals last year (including all 26 colleges). This analysis profiles the 5,004 matriculants who submitted an application to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Services (AACOMAS) and does not include the University of North Texas Health Science Center Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNTHSC/TCOM), because UNTHSC/TCOM’s applications are processed through the Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service.

A full report can be found here.

The mean number of applications per matriculant was 8.39.

Matriculant Race and Ethnicity

The race and ethnicity questions on the AACOMAS application follow the current U.S. Census lead and ask applicants to mark all that apply. Although applicants are allowed to select multiple race/ethnicities, the following table, titled One Race Response, has, by creating the category Multiple Races, allowed for each matriculant to be allocated to only one category. This year, there was a slight decrease (about 1 percent) in the White, non-Hispanic category.

Component MCAT Scores

AACOMAS received MCAT score data from 4,936 matriculants. In cases where we received more than one set of scores for a particular matriculant, we have included the set with the highest total score. Below are the mean, standard deviation and median for each section of the MCAT, as well as the total MCAT score. The total MCAT mean has risen slightly since last year, when it was 26.19, and there have been increases in all three component scores. The total median has remained the same. The total matriculant MCAT score is about 1 point higher than the total applicant score.

Feeder Colleges

Listed are the top 20 undergraduate degree-granting feeder colleges providing the largest number of matriculants. The two large public universities in Michigan—Michigan State University and the University of Michigan—continue to be the largest undergraduate feeder institutions for osteopathic medical education, followed by Brigham Young University, the University of Florida and the University of California, Los Angeles.  Five University of California System colleges continue to send a large number of students to osteopathic medical schools – in 2010, more than 300 matriculants had graduated from these institutions.
