Profiling the 2011 Entering Class of Osteopathic Medical Students 

 

AACOM recently released a report profiling the 2011 entering class of osteopathic medical students. The nation’s colleges of osteopathic medicine have reported a total of 5,409 fall 2011 matriculants, a positive increase from the 5,233 matriculants in the fall of 2010. The report profiles the 5,363 (99 percent) matriculants who submitted an application to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS).

Of the 5,363 matriculants, 221 had previously applied through AACOMAS. The mean number of applications per matriculant was 8.38.

Matriculant Gender

In 2011, 53 percent of osteopathic medical school applicants were male, and 47 percent were female. Among entering students, 56 percent of the 2011 matriculants were male and 44 percent were female, representing a 2 percent decline in female matriculants from 2010.

Component MCAT Scores

AACOMAS received MCAT score data from 5,136 matriculants in 2011. In cases where more than one set of scores were received for a particular matriculant, the set with the highest total score has been included. Below are the mean, standard deviation and median for each section of the MCAT, as well as the total MCAT score. The total MCAT mean has risen slightly from last year’s 26.48 total to 26.51.

Mean GPAs

GPAs were calculated from 5,363 sets of data. There were positive changes in every category (undergraduate, undergraduate and post-baccalaureate, and all coursework) of matriculant GPA from 2010. The mean overall GPA for all completed coursework was 3.50.

Age

The mean age of matriculants has fallen slightly, from 24.6 in 2010 to 24.5 in 2011.
