On May 22, 2012, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) and its partners in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) kicked off the first-ever IPEC Institute. The three-day, sold-out event took place at the Hyatt Dulles in Herndon, VA, with more 150 participants in attendance.
AACOM President Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, along with 12 other distinguished speakers representing a wide array of health care disciplines, led presentations and discussions on various resources and strategies for advancing interprofessional education. Discussion topics included structural support for sustaining interprofessional education, interprofessional collaborative practice core competencies, and the importance of interprofessional education in our health professions education system.
IPEC has plans to host additional institutes in 2013; dates will be announced as they are established.
IPEC works as a collaborative effort to promote interprofessional learning experiences that support team-based patient- and community-centered health care. IPEC includes six national health professions education associations: AACOM, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), American Dental Education Association (ADEA), and the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH).
