Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators


Since its launch in December 2010, Healthy People 2020 has been supporting the achievement of a broad set of national objectives for improving the health of all Americans based on a 10-year schedule set to conclude in year 2020. Healthy People 2020 is made up of 42 topic areas and nearly 600 objectives in total.

A smaller list of topic areas, called Leading Health Indicators (LHI), has been selected by Healthy People 2020 to highlight high-priority national health issues, along with potential resources and means of addressing the challenges. Each broad LHI topic contains several sub-LHI objectives. Every month until year 2020, focus is given to one of these LHI topics and its corresponding LHI objectives are given deadlines.

March 12, 2012, is the deadline for the LHI topic of Nutrition, Physical Activity & Obesity. The corresponding Leading Health Indicators include: Adults who meet current Federal physical activity guidelines for aerobic physical activity and muscle-strengthening activity; Adults who are obese; Children and adolescents who are considered obese; Total vegetable intake for persons aged 2 years and older.
