AACOM President Attends Coalition for Physician Accountability Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, participated as a guest of the American Osteopathic Association at the August 20 meeting of the Coalition for Physician Accountability in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (attendees at left). Discussions at the meeting focused on upcoming changes in the health care system and how provider groups, policy organizations and others can position themselves to ensure continuing high quality in health care provision and medical education.
AACOM President Attends IOM Committee on the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education Meeting
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education held its first meeting September 4-5, 2012, in Washington, DC. AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, joined the public session of the meeting. The Committee was addressed by Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, Administrator, Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Robert Petzel, MD, Under Secretary for Health, and Malcolm Cox, MD, Chief Academic Affiliations Officer, Veterans Health Administration, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; Eric Schoomaker, GEN (Ret), former Army Surgeon General, Scholar in Residence, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences; and a congressional panel, which included personal member staff and committee staff. The IOM Committee will hold its next meeting December 20-21 in Washington, DC. A report is expected to be issued in the fall of 2013. AACOM President Presents at New Jersey Council of Teaching Hospitals Leadership Conference
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, gave a presentation at the New Jersey Council of Teaching Hospitals Leadership Conference on September 6 at the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township, New Jersey. The meeting opened with an overview and discussion on upcoming medical education reforms and challenges. Dr. Shannon’s presentation focused on future changes and challenges confronting medical education, the increased focus on primary care and its effects, and the shift toward interdisciplinary, patient-centered, community-based health education curricula at the nation’s medical colleges.
AACOM President Attends COCA Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) meeting September 8-9 at the O’Hare Hilton Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. The purpose of the meeting was to review reports from the nation’s colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs), consider candidates to the Evaluators Registry and nominations to the COM Appeal Panel, and discuss work plans for standards review and standards survey.
AACOM VP Attends AAMC Workshop
AACOM Vice President for Research and Applications Thomas Levitan, MEd, AACOM Vice President for Research and Applications recently attended “Holistic Review in Admissions: Challenging Conventional Thinking and Practice,” a workshop led by volunteers from the Association of American Medical Colleges Holistic Review group and held on the campus of Des Moines University (DMU). He attended as an observer. Faculty and administrators from across DMU, including the colleges of osteopathic medicine, podiatric medicine and other programs, participated in the workshop, which focused on the benefits, opportunities and challenges associated with holistic admissions practices.
Associate VP Presents at MedEd Conference
AACOM Associate Vice President for Medical Education Tyler Cymet, DO, presented at the August 1-2 Medsation Conference, held at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The presentation, entitled “Kirksville, We Have a Problem,” focused on the future opportunities and challenges confronting osteopathic medical education.
