AACOM Leadership Attend and Present at Osteopathic Medical Education Leadership Conference

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH; Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW; and Vice President for Research and Application Services Tom Levitan, MEd, all delivered presentations during the January 4-6 Osteopathic Medical Education Leadership Conference held in Scottsdale, Arizona. Vice President for Medical Education Luke Mortensen, PhD, FAHA; Associate Vice President for Medical Education Tyler Cymet, DO; and Executive Assistant Anna Naranjo, MA, also attended the conference.

During the conference, AACOM sponsored an Emerging Leaders Brunch, where osteopathic medical students and residents heard from current leaders in the field regarding emerging issues and future opportunities for leadership.

This year’s OME Leadership Conference focused on “Patient Safety: Addressing the Training Gap,” and was co-chaired by Peter B. Dane, DO, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM), and J. Michael Finley, DO, Academic Officer, Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (Western U/ COMP).

AACOM President and AACOM Director of Government Relations Attend IOM Meeting

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, along with AACOM Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender, attended the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education meeting December 19-20 in Washington, DC.

Associate VP for Medical Education Travels to Nicaragua with DOCARE International

AACOM Associate Vice President for Medical Education Tyler Cymet, DO, traveled to Leon, Nicaragua, to participate in a DOCARE International mission December 15-22. On the mission, DOCARE members assisted local medical professionals in the development of a clinical teaching site for the region. DOCARE International is a medical outreach organization dedicated to providing health care and health care development assistance to remote, underserved areas of the world. AACOM President Attends Public Health Workforce Initiative Summit

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Public Health Workforce Development Initiative Summit in Atlanta, Georgia, December 13-14. The meeting was held to facilitate collaboration across the CDC and among Public Health Workforce Initiative partners in order to develop and draft a public health workforce strategy and implementation plan that will include action items, a timeline and defined roles and responsibilities. 

AACOM, AOA and ACGME Meet to Discuss Unified Accreditation System

On December 12, AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, met with members of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to discuss plans for a unified accreditation system for graduate medical education programs in the United States. The meeting was held at ACGME headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.

AACOM President Attends Innovations in Health Care Symposium

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the Third Annual Innovations in Health Care Symposium, hosted by the New York University School of Medicine in New York City on December 7. The conference, entitled Point of Inflection: New Models in Medical Education to Meet America's Changing Health Care Needs, was held to involve national medical education leaders in a discussion about the future of physician training and how to adapt to the population’s changing health care needs.

AACOM President Elected FASHP President

The Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP) 2013 officers were unanimously elected and announced at the group’s December 4 meeting in Middlebrook, Virginia.

FASHP 2013 officials include:

  • President: Dr. Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, President and CEO, AACOM.
  • FASHP President-Elect: Moraith G. North, Executive Director, American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM).
  • FASHP Secretary-Treasurer: Timi Agar-Barwick, Executive Director, Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA).
  • FASHP Immediate Past President: Lydia Reed Middleton, President and CEO, Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).

FASHP serves as a forum for the group’s 14 member associations to meet and address education’s role in organizational matters of health care, encourage effective collaboration among the health professions in education and practice, and prepare health professionals for the future.

VP and Chair for Medical Education Represents AACOM at HPCTF Meeting

AACOM Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, FAHA, represented AACOM at the December 4 meeting of the Healthy People Curriculum Task Force (HPCTF) in Washington, DC. During the meeting, the group reported and deliberated on the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) Cooperative Agreement, a health policy fellowship program that trains students in addressing policy through leading health indicators. The group also discussed the Healthy People 2020 Curriculum Toolkit and new interprofessional objectives regarding prevention and health education. The HPCTF is comprised of eight clinical health professional education associations, including AACOM, the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) and the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA).

AACOM Hosts United States Army Health Professions Scholarship Program Information Session

On November 15, AACOM Associate Director of Application Services Gina M. Moses, MEd, in partnership with staff from the U.S. Army Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), hosted an HPSP information session for aspiring pre-medical college students. The session provided attendees with details about enrolling in the program and program benefits, as well as information on applying to osteopathic medical school. The session also included a presentation from former HPSP recipient and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) alumnus Ryan Smith, DO, MBA. During his presentation, Dr. Smith shared his medical school experiences and the opportunities that the HPSP had afforded him. The meeting was held at AACOMs offices in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
