AACOM Representatives Participate in 17th Annual IAMSE Conference
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, AACOM Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, and AACOM Associate Vice President for Medical Education Tyler Cymet, DO, attended and participated in the 17th Annual International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) Conference in St. Andrews, Scotland. The conference, “Science Education for Health Sciences Professionals Across the Continuum,” was held June 8-11 at the University of St. Andrews. Dr. Mortensen, a member of the IAMSE Board of Directors, participated in the meeting as a member of both the IAMSE Conference Marketing Committee and IAMSE Conference Review Committee.
AACOM Representatives Attend Appalachian Consortium of Osteopathic Medical Schools Summit
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH; Vice President for Research & Application Services Thomas Levitan, MEd; and Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, attended the Appalachian Consortium of Osteopathic Medical Schools Summit held June 6-7 in Harrogate, TN. Participating colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) include the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM), the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (UP-KYCOM), the West Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM), the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), and the Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM). Attendees at the meeting included deans from each of the participating COMs, AOA President Ray E. Stowers, DO, and Richard Vincent, President & CEO of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations. Marcia Brand, PhD, Deputy Director of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) also attended the summit and delivered opening remarks. The purpose of the summit was to explore strategies for establishing a research group to advance rural health research and address regional health disparities with a focus on primary care. The summit also served as a forum for participating COMs to explore methods of collaboration in education, research, and service.
AACOM Representatives Participate in IPEC Institute
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, and AACOM Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, participated in the 2013 IPEC Institute, “Interprofessional Faculty Development Institute for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety,” May 20-22 in Herndon, VA. Dr. Shannon delivered the meeting overview and introduced the plenary speakers. Dr. Mortensen led an “assessment activity” for attendees during each day of the event.
