AACOM Chief of Clinical Education Attends the 2013 Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates
Tyler Cymet, DO, AACOM Chief of Clinical Education, represented the association at the 2013 Interim Meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates November 16-19 in National Habor, MD. The meeting program covered an array of important topics relating to medical education and practice, including research, legislative advocacy initiatives such as the Medicare Sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula and medical liability, licensure and certification maintenance, and more.
AACOM President Participates in NAAC Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, participated in the third meeting of the Veterans Affairs (VA) National Academic Affiliations Council (NAAC), held November 14-15 in Washington, DC. Dr. Shannon was appointed to serve on the NAAC by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. AACOM President Participates in Health Affairs and Academic Medicine Health Policy Briefing
On November 14, AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, participated in a health policy briefing entitled “Redesigning the Health Care Workforce.” The event was co-sponsored by Health Affairs and Academic Medicine, and was held in Washington, DC. During the briefing, Dr. Shannon delivered a presentation entitled “A New Pathway For Medical Education” and discussed the topic of restructuring medical education as a member of a panel of medical education experts, including David C. Goodman, Professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College and Chair of the Council on Graduate Medical Education; and Atul Grover, Chief Advocacy Officer at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). AACOM Government Relations Staff Deliver Advocacy Update at WVSOM
On November 12, AACOM Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations, Mary-Lynn Bender, delivered a presentation on AACOM’s current congressional and federal advocacy efforts to the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) students. The presentation included an overview of the current federal political landscape, AACOM’s policy objectives and goals, and advocacy tips and resources for students to enhance activism efforts. AACOM President Attends National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education National Advisory Council Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended as a member the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education National Advisory Council Meeting, held November 11-12 in Minneapolis, MN. The purpose of the meeting was to engage members of the council in defining a new strategic plan and next steps for the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. Dr. Shannon serves as liaison between the National Center and the Interprofessional Education Collaborative.
AACOM Staff Attend AAMC Annual Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, along with several members of AACOM’s leadership and staff, attended the Association of American Medical College (AAMC) 2013 Annual Meeting, entitled “Learn, Serve, Lead,” November 1-6 in Philadelphia, PA. Tyler Cymet, DO, Chief of Clinical Education; Thomas Levitan, MEd, Vice President for Research and Assistant to the President; Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, Vice President and Chair for Medical Education; Pamela Murphy, MSW, Director of Government Relations; and John E. Roane, Chief Operating Officer, were in attendance representing AACOM’s various departments.
On November 5, Dr. Shannon participated in meeting of the Association of Deans and Directors of Primary Care. Dr. Shannon served as a panelist in a panel presentation on the topic of creating a primary care workforce that can better meet the future needs of patients in the evolving U.S. health care system. AACOM also hosted an Osteopathic Medical Educators Meeting. During this meeting, medical educators and other stakeholders from the osteopathic medical education community gathered to discuss pertinent issues from throughout the osteopathic medical education continuum.
AACOM VP and Chair for Medical Education Attends Generalists in Medical Education 2013 Conference
Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, Vice President and Chair for Medical Education, attended the Generalists in Medical Education 2013 Annual Conference held November 1-2 in Philadelphia, PA. The event, entitled “The Development of Professional Identity for the Future of Medicine,” served as a forum for clinicians, basic scientists, and others involved in medical education to gather and discuss the latest initiatives and innovations in medical education, opportunities for developing professional effectiveness, and to explore solutions to current problems facing medical education.
