AACOM Representatives Attend COGME Meeting

AACOM representatives, including President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH; Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW; and Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender, attended the Council on Graduate Medical Education (COGME) meeting, September 9-10, in Rockville, MD. The meeting opened with a welcome from COGME Chair David Goodman, MD. D. Keith Watson, DO, President, Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, who was appointed to COGME in the fall of 2010, presented as well as participated in the two-day meeting.

Attendees heard presentations on a variety of topics impacting the future of graduate medical education, including innovative health care delivery and financing systems; new health care models and physician workforce demands; interprofessional education and its role in health care delivery and quality patient care; building upon and expansion of health care workforce data and analysis; and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) federal funding opportunities. AACOM Representatives Attend COCA Meeting

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, and AACOM Chief of Clinical Education Tyler Cymet, DO, attended the AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) meeting September 7-8 at the O’Hare Hilton Hotel in Chicago, IL. The purpose of the meeting was to review reports from the nation’s colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs), consider candidates to the Evaluators Registry and nominations to the COM Appeal Panel, and discuss work plans for standards review and standards survey.

AACOM VP and Chair for Medical Education Travels to Czech Republic for AMEE Conference

AACOM Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, traveled to the Czech Republic to attend the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) conference, held at the Prague Congress Centre. The conference, “Colouring Outside the Lines,” featured a program focused on challenging preconceived ideas about medical education and working to produce future health care professionals to meet the needs of society as a whole. Plenary and symposia sessions were transmitted to offsite AMEE conference participants around the world. These videos will be made public through MedEdWorld in October. 

AACOM President Attends Coalition for Physician Accountability Meeting

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, participated as a guest of the American Osteopathic Association at the August 19 meeting of the Coalition for Physician Accountability in Chicago, IL. Discussions at the meeting focused on current and upcoming changes to the nation’s health care system and how organizations across the health care community can position themselves to ensure high quality health care for the nation and collaborate for the betterment of medical education as a whole.
