AACOM held a series of successful strategic lobby days for its Board of Deans (BOD) in December 2013. Participating BOD members were from targeted COMs located in the districts/states of congressional members of key committees of jurisdiction over issues of importance to osteopathic medical education. The issues discussed at meetings throughout the strategic lobby days included student financial aid as it relates to the Higher Education Act reauthorization, graduate medical education (GME), the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Teaching Health Center GME Program, and other critical policy topics relating to osteopathic medical education. AACOM and its participating member institutions’ presences on Capitol Hill were vital to increasing awareness of the impact these policy issues will have on the nation’s colleges of osteopathic medicine.
