AACOM President Attends OIA Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the Osteopathic International Alliance (OIA) meeting January 11-12 in Austin, TX. The event is held to bring together representatives from the group’s more than 70 international member organizations. The meeting program included keynote speeches, breakout sessions, and scheduled discussions covering topics ranging from physician registration and licensure to global care delivery. Today, the OIA comprises more than 70 organizations from 27 countries, with the goal of establishing unity across the global osteopathic medical community.
AACOM President and Staff Leadership Attend OME XXIV
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, along with members of AACOM’s staff leadership traveled to Austin, TX for the 24th Annual Osteopathic Medical Education Leadership Conference (OME XXIV) January 9-11. Tyler Cymet, DO, Chief of Clinical Education; Thomas Levitan, MEd, Vice President for Research and Assistant to the President; Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, Vice President and Chair for Medical Education; and Pamela Murphy, MSW, Director of Government Relations, were all in attendance at the meeting. Each year, the conference brings osteopathic medical educators and leaders together to exchange information and ideas. This year’s event featured sessions related to the theme “Virtually There–Advancing Education Through Technology, Innovation, and Collaboration.” AACOM and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) co-sponsor the event.
AACOM Government Relations Staff Deliver Advocacy Update at DMU-COM
On December 17, 2013, AACOM Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations, Mary-Lynn Bender, delivered a presentation on AACOM’s current congressional and federal advocacy efforts to students at the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine (DMU-COM). The presentation included an overview of the current federal political landscape, AACOM’s policy objectives and goals, and advocacy tips and resources for students to enhance activism efforts. AACOM President and Leadership Attend COCA and BOE Meetings
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, along with AACOM COO John E. Roane, Jr.; AACOM Chief of Clinical Education Tyler Cymet, DO; and AACOM Vice President for Research and Assistant to the President Thomas Levitan, MEd, participated in the recent AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) meeting held December 6-7, 2013, in Chicago, IL. The meeting agenda included discussions on AACOM member college updates, as well as other topics or importance related to osteopathic medical education and graduate medical education. Dr. Cymet also attended the recent AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Education (BOE) meeting. The BOE meeting was held on December 6 in Chicago.
AACOM President Attends FASHP CEO Retreat
The Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP) CEOs retreat was held December 2-3 in Middleburg, VA. AACOM President and CEO and Chair of the FASHP CEOs Stephen C. Shannon presided over the meeting. Agenda topics at the event covered pertinent issues such as the future of health professions education, interprofessional education initiatives, and diversity in health professions education.
