AACOM Chief of Clinical Education Attends NIH NACCAM Meeting

Tyler Cymet, DO, AACOM Chief of Clinical Education, attended the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine's (NACCAM) 51st meeting on February 7 in Bethesda, MD. Agenda items for the meeting included presentations on enhancing reproducibility and transparency in research, assessing chelation therapy for diabetic patients, and other council business. Speakers at this event included leadership from both the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, FL and the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

AACOM President, Government Relations Staff Attend AcademyHealth NHPC

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, along with AACOM Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender, and Judith Mun, MPA, AACOM Policy and Public Affairs Specialist, attended AcademyHealth’s National Health Policy Conference (NHPC), held February 3-4 in Washington, DC. The NHPC provides attendees a comprehensive outlook on the nation’s health policy agenda, with programming focused on critical health care issues and policy priorities for the upcoming year. AACOM President Receives Maine Osteopathic Association Service Award

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the Main Osteopathic Association’s Mid-Winter Symposium held January 31-February 2 in Portland, ME. During this meeting, Dr. Shannon received the Association’s Distinguished Service Award to honor his many contributions to the osteopathic medical profession throughout his career.

AACOM Government Relations Staff Attend AAMC Professional Development Conference for Health Professions Financial Aid Administrators

AACOM Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender, attended the 2014 Professional Development Conference (PDC) for Health Professions Financial Aid Administrators, held January 15-17 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The conference is an annual event hosted by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and comprises keynote sessions, presentations, meetings, and workshops on topics pertinent to financial aid advisors and other relevant parties from throughout the health professions education community. Ms. Murphy and Ms. Bender, who served on the 2014 PDC Planning Committee, also attended AACOM’s Council of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CSFAA) annual in-person meeting, which was held in conjunction with the conference.

AACOM VP and Chair for Medical Education Attends 2014 Winter IPEC Institute

Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, AACOM Vice President and Chair for Medical Education, attended the 2014 Winter IPEC Institute, held January 12-15 in Herndon, VA. AACOM President Attends Coalition for Physician Accountability Meeting

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the recent Coalition for Physician Accountability meeting held January 10-11 in Philadelphia, PA. The meeting was hosted by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). Attendees discussed topics primarily focused on the integration of competency-based frameworks throughout the education continuum and using these frameworks to better meet the needs of the public. The Coalition for Physician Accountability was formed to strengthen the professional self-regulation system through continuous improvement of medical education, assessment and practice. Dr. Shannon attended this meeting as a guest of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
