Dr. Cymet Attends OPTI Tour in Michigan

Associate Vice President for Medical Education and Chief of Clinical Education Tyler Cymet, DO, attended an Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution (OPTI) tour co-sponsored by AACOM, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Education Committee. The tour took place at the Michigan State University Statewide Campus System in Detroit, MI July 30 to August 1.

AACOM Leadership Attend IOM Report Release Public Briefing

On July 29, AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, and AACOM Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, attended the public briefing and panel discussion to announce the recently released report of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education (GME). The event was held at the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation’s Barbara Jordan Conference Center in Washington, DC. The report, entitled “Graduate Medical Education That Meets the Nation's Health Needs,” discusses and recommends significant changes to current GME financing and governance and suggests preliminary steps for Medicare GME payment system reform and increasing investment in the nation’s physician workforce and GME system. AACOM Leadership Meets with White House Office of National Drug Control Policy

On July 22, AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH; Associate Vice President for Medical Education and Chief of Clinical Education Tyler Cymet, DO; Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke Mortensen, PhD; and AACOM Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, met with David K. Mineta, Deputy Director of Demand Reduction for the Office of National Drug Control Policy, to discuss potential opportunities for collaboration in areas of national import such as substance abuse prevention, addiction treatment, and more. AACOM Leadership Attend 2014 AOA Annual Business Meeting

Members of AACOM’s staff and leadership represented the association at the 2014 Annual Business Meeting of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), held July 15-20 in Chicago, IL. Those who attended from AACOM include President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH; Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke Mortensen, PhD; Vice President of Communications and Marketing Lisa M. Cole, MBA; Associate Vice President for Medical Education and Chief of Clinical Education Tyler Cymet, DO; and Program Manager for Single GME Accreditation Alegneta Long. These individuals attended meetings and took in presentations on a variety of topics of import to the osteopathic medical and osteopathic medical education community. Drs. Shannon, Mortensen, and Cymet also delivered presentations at the meeting. A highlight of the event was the AOA House of Delegates, which convened to discuss and vote on the future of the single accreditation system for graduate medical education. Dr. Cymet Chaired the Maryland Delegation during the meeting.
