Profiling the 2013 Entering Class of Osteopathic Medical Students

AACOM’s Research Department recently released the “Osteopathic Medical College Applicant and Matriculant Profile for the Class Entering in Fall 2013,” a report summarizing data gathered from the 2013 entering class of osteopathic medical students. Sample data from the report is outlined below.

The nation’s colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) have reported a total of 6,184 fall 2013 matriculants. This figure represents a positive increase of 610 matriculated students since the fall of 2012. Of that 6,184, the new report profiles the 6,135 (99 percent) matriculants who submitted an application to the AACOM Application Service (AACOMAS). The other 49 reported matriculants either applied directly from other programs at the COM or applied directly to the émigré physician program at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYIT-COM). The University of North Texas Health Sciences Center at Fort Worth/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNTHSC/TCOM) receives its applications through the Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service. Data from these applicants and matriculants are not part of the AACOMAS database and are not included in the report.

Matriculant Gender

In 2013, 55.6 percent of osteopathic medical school matriculants were male, and 44.4 percent were female, representing a 0.2 percent decrease in male, and 0.2 percent increase in female, matriculants from 2012.
