On November 13, Tyler Cymet, DO, AACOM Chief of Clinical Education, served as a speaker at a panel discussion hosted by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRma). The focus of the discussion was on access, with a special emphasis on exchange issues.
AACOM President and GME Program Manager Attend PCOM OGME Event
On November 12, AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, and AACOM Program Manager Alegneta Long attended an event on graduate medical education hosted by the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) MEDNet. At the event, Dr. Shannon provided an update on the single GME accreditation system implementation and held a question and answer session.
AACOM VP of Government Relations Delivers Presentation at the AATHC Fall Meeting
On November 12, AACOM Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, presented alongside government relations representatives from the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Osteopathic Association, the Council of Academic Family Medicine, and the National Association of Community Health Centers, to the American Association of Teaching Health Centers in Washington, DC. The presentation detailed AACOM’s, as well as the aforementioned stakeholders’ advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill in support of the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) Program, which is facing funding expiration at the end of fiscal year 2015. AACOM continues to work with these stakeholders as part of a larger national coalition in support of this program, which is vital to osteopathic medical residency programs across the country.
AACOM Chief of Clinical Education Attends the 2014 Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates
Tyler Cymet, DO, AACOM Chief of Clinical Education, represented the association at the 2014 Interim Meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates November 8-11 in Dallas, TX. The meeting program covered an array of important topics relating to medical education and practice, including research, legislative advocacy initiatives formula and medical liability, licensure and certification maintenance, and more. At the meeting, Dr. Cymet also participated in an ethics discussion on students as practice patients.
AACOM Staff Attend AAMC Annual Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, along with several members of AACOM’s leadership and staff, attended the Association of American Medical College (AAMC) 2014 Annual Meeting, entitled “Learn, Serve, Lead,” November 6-10 in Chicago, IL. Tyler Cymet, DO, Chief of Clinical Education; Thomas Levitan, MEd, Vice President for Research and Assistant to the President; Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, Vice President and Chair for Medical Education; and John E. Roane, Chief Operating Officer, were in attendance representing AACOM’s various departments.
On November 7, Dr. Shannon participated in meeting of the Association of Deans and Directors of Primary Care. Dr. Shannon served as a panelist in a panel presentation on the topic of creating a primary care recruitment and retention.
AACOM President Attends FASHP CEO Meeting
On November 5, the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP) CEOs group met in Washington, DC. AACOM President and CEO and Chair of the FASHP CEOs Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, presided over the meeting. Agenda topics at the event covered pertinent and broad issues such as diversity in health professions education, the future of health professions education, and opportunities for interprofessional collaboration.
AACOM President Delivers Keynote Address at a Meeting of the Kentucky Advisors to the Health Professions AACOM Government Relations Staff Present to AACOM Groups and Council at OMED
On November 1, AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH served as the keynote speaker at a meeting of the Kentucky Advisors to the Health Professions, held on the University of Pikeville campus in Pikeville, KY. The address focused on focused on the future of the U.S. healthcare system, including new payment and delivery models. As part of this overview, it also examined demographic shifts in the U.S. population, spotlighted changes and innovations in health care education, and addressed potential challenges such as the expected primary care workforce shortage.
AACOM Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender delivered a number of legislative updates to the following AACOM groups and councils which convened meetings in conjunction with the American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) 2014 OMED conference, held October 25-29 in Seattle, WA: the Assembly of Presidents (AOP), Council of Fiscal Officers (CFO), Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP), and the Council of Development and Alumni Relations Professionals (Dev-Alum).
