Council of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CSFAA)
The Council of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CSFAA), led by Chair Steven Jorden, MA, Director of Student Financial Services at A.T. Still University of Health Sciences - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) and A.T. Still University of Health Sciences – School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA), convened a conference call meeting on October 22, 2014. The CSFAA approved minutes from its July meeting, followed by an update from Mary-Lynn Bender, AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations, on the AACOM-sponsored interactive financial aid training modules for osteopathic medical students. Other discussion topics included administrative issues pertinent to the student financial aid administrators’ community, as well as a legislative and regulatory update from Pamela Murphy, MSW, AACOM Vice President of Government Relations. The next meeting will take place in person on January 15, 2015, at the Association of American Medical Colleges’ 2015 Professional Development Conference for Health Professions Financial Aid Administrators in San Antonio, TX.

Summaries of Meetings Held at OMED 2014

Assembly of Presidents (AOP)
The Assembly of Presidents (AOP) met on October 28 under the leadership of Chair William D. Strampel, DO, Dean of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSU-COM). The group heard various reports on AACOM activities, including a legislative update from AACOM Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender. Each of the attending group members reported on updates from their respective schools. The group also re-elected Michael D. Adelman, DO, JD, President of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM), as AOP Chair. Dr. Adelman will begin his second term as Chair July 1, 2015. Additionally, the AOP conferred its annual Dale Dodson award to Bruce Dubin, DO, JD, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost and Dean of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCUMB-COM) (read more).

Council of Fiscal Officers (CFO)
The Council of Fiscal Officers (CFO) met on October 27 under the leadership of Chair Peter Doulis, CPA, Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). The meeting opened with introductions and pertinent announcements from council members. AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, provided an update on AACOM operations and activities, and AACOM Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender delivered a legislative update. The meeting adjourned after an open discussion on agenda topics for the next meeting.

Council of Osteopathic Medical Admissions Officers (COMAO)
The Council of Osteopathic Medical Admissions Officers (COMAO) convened October 28 under the leadership of Chair Susan M. Hanson, MS, Director of Admissions at the Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (Western U/COMP). During the meeting, the council approved minutes from their April 2014 meeting, and then discussed a number of pertinent topics, including recruitment events, the AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) standards, current and future reports to the colleges based on data from the AACOM Application Service (AACOMAS), opportunities for collaboration with other AACOM councils, and more.

Council of Osteopathic Medical Student Services Officers (COMSSO)
The Council of Osteopathic Medical Student Services Officers (COMSSO) met October 26 under the leadership of Chair Tina Woodruff, EdD, Chief Student Affairs Officer at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). After introductions, the council met together with the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) to hear a presentation on the progress of the new single graduate medical education accreditation system. The joint meeting with COSGP was also an opportunity to discuss other ways for these two councils to work together on topics of mutual interest. Additionally, COMSSO participated in discussions on applicant background checks and current AACOM activities, among other items of interest. The meeting adjourned with closing remarks.

Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP)
The Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) met October 23-26, under the leadership of Chair Carisa Rose Champion-Lippmann, osteopathic medical student at the Nova Southeastern University - College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-COM).

During its meetings, the council:

  • Conducted a “Meet ‘n’ Greet” event
  • Observed a presentation from AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon on current AACOM initiatives and activities
  • Received a legislative update from AACOM Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender
  • Participated in an open forum with the Council of Osteopathic Medical Student Services Officers (COMSSO) on issues facing students
  • Heard special reports from representatives of various colleges of osteopathic medicine
  • Discussed other germane topics outlined in the group’s agenda

Immediately following each COSGP meeting, the COSGP Executive Board conducts an electronic survey to solicit council member feedback on the board’s choices for speakers, activities, etc., for self-reflection, and for improvement of the next meeting.

The next meeting of the COSGP will be held in January 15-18, 2015 in Raleigh, NC on the Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM) campus.

Council of Development and Alumni Relations Professionals (Dev-Alum)
The Council of Development and Alumni Relations Professionals (Dev-Alum) convened for a lunch meeting on October 26 under the leadership of Chair Ryan N. Miller, Director of Alumni Affairs, Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (OSU-COM). The meeting opened with introductions and a brief report delivered by AACOM COO John E. Roane, Jr. The group then held table discussions on a variety of topics, including annual giving best practices, establishing or revamping alumni relations strategies at both new and more established schools, exhibiting at OMED 2015, and more. The group also received a legislative update from AACOM Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender, and an update on the single accreditation system for graduate medical education, delivered by Alegneta Long, AACOM Project Manager.

Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles (ECOP)
The Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles (ECOP) convened a brief meeting on October 27 under the leadership of Chair Kevin D. Treffer, DO, Associate Professor and OMM Coordinator, Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCUMB-COM). During the meeting, the group members discussed current activities at each of their respective colleges. The group also continued work on documents 1) outlining the specific competencies within clinical clerkships directly related to osteopathic principles and practice, and 2) the modalities to be included in every core curriculum.

International Collaborative (IC)
The International Collaborative (IC) convened on October 26 under the leadership of Chair Jan M. Willcox, DO, Vice Dean at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Virginia Campus (VCOM-VC). The agenda for the meeting included an open discussion about the current COSGP Global Awareness Committee student cultural awareness project and the IC reception at the upcoming Joint AACOM & AODME 2015 Annual Conference, among other matters.

Marketing and Communications Advisory Council (MAC)
The Marketing and Communications Advisory Council (MAC) met on October 26 under the leadership of Chair Scott Colton, COM/HPD Director of Medical Communications and Public Relations at the Nova Southeastern University-College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-COM). The meeting opened with introductions and a brief update on AACOM’s internal communications efforts, delivered by Lisa M. Cole, AACOM Vice President of Communications and MAC liaison. The council discussed a variety of pertinent topics, including ways to further enhance and grow committee participation (in both online collaboration and in-person meetings), an upcoming national osteopathic medicine awareness event, as well as communications efforts happening around the single graduate medical education accreditation system formation.
