Dr. Cymet is Inaugurated as MedChi’s 167th President
On October 19, Tyler C. Cymet, DO, AACOM Chief of Clinical Education, was officially installed as the 167th president of the Maryland State Medical Society (MedChi). Dr. Cymet is the first osteopathic physician (DO) to ever hold this position. The installation took place at a presidential gala held at Westminster Hall in Baltimore, MD to honor Dr. Cymet’s inauguration. Congratulations, Dr. Cymet!
Dr. Shannon Appointed VA NAAC Secretarial Appointee
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended a meeting of the Veterans Affairs (VA) National Academic Affiliations Council (NAAC) on October 16-17 in Washington, DC. Dr. Shannon has served on this council since 2011. Prior to the meeting, the council appointed Dr. Shannon to serve a two-year term as its Secretarial Appointee. The NAAC was created to advise the secretary of the VA on matters affecting its partnerships in the academic community.
AACOM Government Relations Staff Deliver Advocacy Update at MSUCOM
On October 9, AACOM’s Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, and Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender, delivered a presentation on AACOM’s current congressional and federal advocacy and legislative efforts to interested osteopathic medical students at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). The presentation took place at the MSUCOM campus in East Lansing, MI and included an overview of the current federal political landscape and AACOM’s strategic policy objectives and goals. Ms. Murphy and Ms. Bender also distributed information and resources for students interested in initiating or enhancing their activism efforts. AACOM Representatives Attend Single Accreditation Operations Committee Meeting
On October 8, several representatives from AACOM, including Dr. Shannon; Lisa M. Cole, MBA, Vice President of Communications and Marketing; and Alegneta Long, Program Manager, participated in a meeting of the Single Accreditation Operations Committee, which includes representatives and leadership from AACOM, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The meeting was held in Chicago, IL, although some attendees joined the meeting by conference call. The purpose of the meeting was to continue work on integrating the new single accreditation system for U.S. GME.
