AACOM GR Team Attends AAFP GME Briefing
On September 15, Mary-Lynn Bender, Assistant Director of Government Relations, attended a Hill briefing for the public release of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) proposal to reform the graduate medical education (GME) system, entitled “Aligning Resources, Increasing Accountability, and Delivering a Primary Care Physician Workforce For America.” The proposal highlighted the AAFP’s recommendations to improve the current GME system in order to meet the future physician workforce needs.
AACOM VP of Medical Education Attends TEDMED 2014
AACOM Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke Mortensen, PhD, attended the 2014 TEDMED, held in Washington, DC September 10-12. AACOM also provided access to its members to this year’s TEDMED offering; presentations and performances from individuals with keen insight on the future of medical practice, medical education, healthcare design, and other innovations. Speakers at the event guided the audience through direct and tangential topics in medicine, science, and technology and challenged attendees to think outside the box and approach common, daily challenges in healthcare and education in new ways. While AACOM will work to continue make content from this event available to its members in the future, members may want to consider attending the event in person to experience the full and rich offerings of this powerful event firsthand. AACOM Representatives Attend COCA Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, and AACOM Associate Vice President for Medical Education, Chief of Clinical Education Tyler Cymet, DO, attended the AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) meeting September 6-7 at the O’Hare Hilton Hotel in Chicago, IL. Representatives from AACOM’s Council on Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP), Mona Bazargan, COSGP Public Relations Representative and osteopathic medical student at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM), and Sarah Julane Wolff, COSGP American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) Representative and osteopathic medical student at the Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (WesternU/COMP) were also present at the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to review reports from the nation’s colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs), consider candidates to the Evaluators Registry and nominations to the COM Appeal Panel, and discuss work plans for standards review and standards survey.
AACOM VP of Medical Education Attends AMEE 2014 Annual Conference in Milan, Italy
AACOM Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke Mortensen, PhD, attended the 2014 Annual Conference of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), held August 30-September 3 in Milan, Italy. The conference program focused on “Excellence in Education - the 21st Century Teacher.” Over 3000 attendees from more than 22 countries were engaged in formative discussions on best practices in curriculum, interprofessional education, the use of social media in medical science, learning assessment, graduate medical education, evaluation of teaching, humanities education, professionalism, education research, coaching, mentoring, competency-based paradigms, professional development, patient safety, empathy development, and more. The AMEE is a worldwide organization with members in 90 countries on five continents.
Associate Director of Application Services, Recruitment Attends Society of Polish American Pre-Health Professionals Conference
Gina M. Moses, MEd, AACOM Associate Director of Application Services, Recruitment attended the Society of Polish American Pre-Health Professionals “Lives in Medicine Conference
,” August 23 in Chicago, IL. Ms. Moses delivered a presentation on osteopathic medical education to approximately 100 pre-med students from greater Chicago region attending the conference.
AACOM President Attends Coalition for Physician Accountability Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the recent Coalition for Physician Accountability meeting held August 18-19. The meeting was hosted by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). The Coalition for Physician Accountability was formed to strengthen the professional self-regulation system through continuous improvement of medical education, assessment and practice. Dr. Shannon attended this meeting as a guest of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
AACOM President Participates in Meeting of Committee on GME Transition
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended a meeting of the AACOM-appointed Committee on GME Transition, held August 15-16 at the AACOM office in Chevy Chase, MD. The group was formed to development a white paper focused on recommendations for the transition to a single GME accreditation system for MD and DO graduates. The white paper is scheduled to be released by October 2014.
