On September 12, 2014, the Women in Government Relations (WGR) Health and Social Policies Task Force hosted a briefing to discuss several topics related to graduate medical education (GME), including its current status in the 113th Congress and the recently released Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Graduate Medical Education that Meets the Nation’s Health Needs. AACOM, a proud sponsor of the WGR Empowerment Network (WEN), was represented at the event by members of its Government Relations Department.
Panel speakers at the event included:

- Barbara Ross-Lee, DO, Vice President for Health Sciences and Medical Affairs, New York Institute of Technology, Member, IOM Committee of the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education
- Leonard Marquez, Director, Government Relations, Association of American Medical Colleges
Kristen O'Brien, JD, Senior Attorney, American Medical Association Panelists discussed support for GME and stressed the importance for Congress to provide long-term legislative solutions to align GME with national workforce demands. During the briefing, Dr. Ross-Lee, as a member of the IOM Committee on the Governance and Financing of GME, discussed the report’s recommendations for improving the U.S. GME system so that it can meet the nation’s current and future healthcare needs.
