Government Relations Staff Attend AAMC 2015 Joint PDC for Financial Aid & Student Records Administrators 

AACOM Vice President of Government Relations, Pamela Murphy, and Director of Congressional Affairs, Mary-Lynn Bender, will attend the Association of American Medical Colleges' Professional Development Conference for Financial Aid and Student Records Administrators in San Antonio, TX, January 14-16. AACOM's Council of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CSFAA) will hold its annual extended in-person meeting during the PDC, which will be led by staff liaisons Pamela Murphy and Mary-Lynn Bender.

AACOM President Attends RowanSOM Forum on Medical Education Opportunities and Challenges

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, served as a panel speaker at the Forum on Medical Education Opportunities and Challenges at Rowan University, which took place on December 2-4 in Glassboro, NJ. The event consisted of numerous discussions and presentations by invited panelists, focusing primarily on the current outlook for medical education at Rowan University. AACOM President Attends AOA BOE Meeting

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the recent American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Bureau of Osteopathic Education (BOE) meeting where he provided commentary for the meeting attendees. The meeting took place on December 5 in Chicago, IL.

AACOM Leadership Attends COCA Meeting

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended a recent meeting of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), held December 6-7 in Chicago, IL. The next COCA meeting will be held April 18-19, 2015, in Chicago, IL.

The AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) serves the public by establishing, maintaining, and applying accreditation standards and procedures to ensure that academic quality and continuous quality improvement delivered by the colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) reflect the evolving practice of osteopathic medicine. The scope of the COCA encompasses the accreditation of the COMs.

AACOM President Attends FASHP CEO Retreat

The Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP) CEOs retreat was held December 10-11 in Middleburg, VA. AACOM President and CEO and Immediate Past Chair of the FASHP CEOs Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, presided over the meeting. Agenda topics at the event covered pertinent issues such as the future of health professions education, interprofessional education initiatives, and opportunities for interprofessional collaboration. Additionally, Moriath North, Executive Director at the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM) took office as the new FASHP CEO Chair.

AACOM President and Staff Leadership Attend and Present OME XXV

AACOM President and CEO, Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, along with members of AACOM’s staff leadership, along with nearly 400 other OME leaders, traveled Los Angeles, CA for the 25th Annual Osteopathic Medical Education Leadership Conference (OME XXV). The conference, co-sponsored by AACOM and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), was held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel January 8-10, where educators and leaders in osteopathic medical education came together to exchange information and ideas.

A number of AACOM staff leaders delivered presentations during the conference under the theme, “The Future is Now: Bridging a Course for the Road Ahead.” Associate Vice President for Medical Education and Chief of Clinical Education Tyler C. Cymet, DO, served on the planning committee board for this year’s meeting, as well as a conference panel for the single accreditation and following open forum Q&A session. Additionally, Vice President of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, delivered a legislative update highlighting AACOM's current advocacy initiatives and projects, and Vice President for Research and Assistant to the President Thomas Levitan, MEd, presented a report on VSAS.

AACOM also sponsored an Emerging Leaders Brunch, featuring a presentation from Luke Mortensen, PhD, AACOM Vice President and Chair for Medical Education. The brunch was

attended by selected osteopathic medical students and residents who heard from current leaders in the field regarding emerging issues and future opportunities for leadership.

2014 Winter IPEC Institute Overview

AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, and AACOM Vice President and Chair of Medical Education Luke Mortensen, PhD, attended the 2014 Winter Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Interprofessional Faculty Development Institute for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety December 9-10  Herndon, VA. The event was the last of the 2014 series of IPEC Institutes held for the year.

The winter institute focused on developing faculty teams, able to create an implementable plan for an interprofessional project that will allow the teams to undertake curricular change in their home institutions. Projects focused on improving learner competence and skills in quality improvement and patient safety.

Priority registration is underway for the next Faculty Development Institute focused on Building Interprofessional Education for Population Health, planned for April 29-May 1, 2015.

AACOM VP of Government Relations Served on Panel at NAO Conference

On December 2, 2014, AACOM's Vice President of Government Relations, Pamela Murphy, participated in a National AHEC Organization (NAO) panel on national advocacy efforts to support federal funding for the AHEC Program. The NAO's conference theme was “AHEC: A National Resource; Creatively Addressing Local, State and National Health Workforces Issues.” The conference was held in the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, VA.

AACOM Senior Policy Specialist Attends Two-Day Professional Women in Advocacy Conference

Judith Mun, AACOM's Senior Policy Specialist, attended the November 20-21, 2014 Professional Women in Advocacy Conference. The event featured the 2ndAnnual Excellence in Advocacy Reception and Awards at the Capital Hilton in Washington, DC.
