AACOM is honored to become a member of the Pan American Federation of Associations of Medical Schools (PAFAMS), an international non-governmental organization that brings together medical schools in the Americas. PAFAMS was formed in 1962 and has over 550 affiliated medical schools. The previous 12 members include the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and 11 organizations throughout Latin America and Canada, as well as 10 individual universities. The mission of the Federation is to “Promover la calidad en la educación médica con impacto en la salud, mediante actividades académicas, de investigación y de extension,” which translated to English means, "To promote the quality of medical education with a focus on impact health, through academic, research, and extension activities." AACOM’s mission is closely aligned with the mission of the Federation, focusing on fostering innovation and promoting excellence and quality in medical education, research, and service.

AACOM has a long history of working alongside and, when appropriate, partnering with other medical education and health care organizations such as the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Likewise, AACOM values cooperative and purposeful relationships with forward-thinking entities and organizations across the globe, such as the International Association of Medical Science Educations (IAMSE), where Luke Mortensen, PhD, AACOM’s Former Vice President and Chair for Medical Education, served as the IAMSE Annual Meeting Program Chair in 2016. In addition to its partnerships, AACOM's International Collaborative initiative facilitates and provides structure for educational efforts occurring at colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) around global health and international rotations. Individual COMs have recently been increasing international involvement by establishing sites for osteopathic students to study and be exposed to health care in international settings.

AACOM looks forward to a long and mutually-beneficial relationship with PAFAMS and hopes to work closely with the other allied organizations to continuously improve the quality of medical education in the Americas.
