Key Updates

ACGME Common Program Requirements Proposed Revisions

On February 6, 2018, the ACGME posted proposed revisions to the ACGME common program requirements Sections I-V. These proposed revisions are open for public comment until March 22. Among the proposed changes is the formal recognition of AOA board certification as an acceptable credential for program directors and faculty. View proposed revisions and impact statement.

Table 1 provides a brief snapshot of the status of ACGME applications as of February 22, 2018. The data are pulled from the ACGME Accreditation Data System (ADS).

AACOM Student Webinar on the Single GME Accreditation System & 2018 Residency Match

On Wednesday, January 10, AACOM hosted a webinar for osteopathic medical students, faculty advisors at colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs), and the broader osteopathic medical education community on the single GME accreditation system. Speakers included:

AACOM recently made available video clips featuring osteopathic medical student leaders from AACOM's Council of Student Government Presidents (COSGP). Assembly of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Educators (AOGME) (formerly AODME) Webinar Series
Transitioning your Traditional Rotating Internship (TRI) to ACGME Transitional Year, Wednesday, March 14 at 4:00 PM ET.

This presentation will feature Cheryl Gross, MA, CAE, Executive Director, ACGME Transitional Year Review Committee. This session will provide an overview of the Transitional Year program, the application process, and the specialties that utilize the transitional year as the preliminary year. Attendees will be able to:

  • Define the background and function of the Transitional Year program in GME
  • Develop and submit an effective Transitional Year application
  • Develop an appropriate block diagram
  • Assess the rotation requirements of the Transitional Year resident

ACGME/AODME (now AOGME) Pre-Conference for Osteopathic Programs and Institutions

The ACGME in partnership with AODME (now AOGME) will hold a pre-conference for AOA-accredited programs and institutions at the ACGME Annual Educational Conference on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM ET in Orlando, FL. The pre-conference is intended for AOA-accredited programs and institutions who wish to learn more about ACGME accreditation and Osteopathic Recognition.  Educating Leaders 2018: The AACOM Annual Conference 2018

The upcoming AACOM annual conference will include programming on the single GME accreditation system, including a pre-conference workshop on osteopathic recognition, oral presentations on the latest updates and data on the transition, ACGME milestones, CLER and Pursuing Excellence, resources focused on scholarly activity, and navigating the application process.
