Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPHStephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, Appointed to Department of Veterans Affairs National Academic Affiliations Council

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki has appointed Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, President and CEO of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), to serve on the newly created Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Academic Affiliations Council.  According to the Veterans Administration (VA), the new council was created to “advise the Secretary and the Under Secretary for Health on matters affecting partnerships between VA and its academic affiliates. The Council will provide a forum for discussion and will benefit both VA and the academic community.”

Dr. Shannon is the only osteopathic physician (DO) appointed to the council. His appointment signals the growing presence of osteopathic medical education and osteopathic medicine in the national and military health policy arenas.

About Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, President and CEO, AACOM:

  • Dr. Shannon’s appointment ensures that the interests of colleges of osteopathic medical education will be considered by this critical body.
  • Dr. Shannon has been President of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) since January 2006.  Prior to assuming this position, he served as Vice President for Health Services and Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of New England. He served as Chair of the AACOM Board of Deans from July 2003 to June 2005.
  • Since joining AACOM, Dr. Shannon has served as a national leader and vocal advocate in the areas of public health and preventive medicine, health professions workforce issues, undergraduate and graduate medical education, and rural health.
  • Dr. Shannon earned his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree in 1986 from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine, and his master's of public health degree in 1990 from the Harvard University School of Public Health. He is board certified in preventive medicine and osteopathic family practice.
  • He is a member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry, has served on numerous public health boards and commissions, and is a founder and past Chair of the Board of the Maine Center for Public Health

About the VA National Academic Affiliations Council:

  • In 2006, the Blue Ribbon Panel on VA-Medical School Affiliations (Panel) was established to advise the Secretary of the VA on a comprehensive philosophical framework to enhance VA partnerships with medical schools and affiliated institutions.
  • In order to enhance the current available mechanisms for meaningful dialogue between the VA and the academic community, the panel recommended that partnerships with the academic community be strengthened to improve health care for veterans and lead the transformation of the U.S. health care system.
  • The National Academic Affiliations Council, organized as a standing committee under the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), is intended to promote dialogue and connections. Council members were appointed by the Secretary of the VA today, and include 14 leaders from all sectors of the academic health professions community including deans, distinguished faculty, health care administrators and leaders of professional associations and organizations.

Founded in 1898, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) represents the nation’s 26 colleges of osteopathic medicine, offering the doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) degree at 34 locations in 25 states. AACOM promotes excellence in osteopathic medical education, in research and in service, and fosters innovation and quality among osteopathic medical colleges to improve the health of the American public.
