Integrating COCA Diversity Standards into Your COM

Incorporating the new COCA DEI accreditation standards into osteopathic medical education may seem to be a daunting task; however, there are best practices to promote DEI integration and strategies to assess the effectiveness of DEI initiatives to adequately meet these standards. In this workshop, you will learn the importance of DEI in healthcare and how integrating DEI into your institution’s curricula and training can positively impact diverse patient communities. Participants will be provided with tools to analyze their institution’s integration of DEI. Participants will engage in conversations with each other and with our panel of DEI experts and work to develop practical strategies for integrating DEI principles into the leadership, culture, training, and curricula of their respective institutions. Each participant will leave this workshop with an innovative plan of action to implement DEI learning outcomes for faculty, staff, and students. Join us for this engaging conversation as we work to achieve the required DEI accreditation standards.

Objectives

  1. Identify specific COCA accreditation standards and criteria where DEI initiatives can be integrated effectively.

  2. Gain a comprehensive understanding of the concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion and their relevance int he context of osteopathic medical education.

  3. Explore methods for assessing the impact of DEI initiatives and strategies for holding institutions accountable for progress in DEI, ensuring continuous improvement.

HALF DAY Afternoon (1:30 pm – 5:00 pm CT)

Faculty Challenges in Supporting At-Risk Learners Across the Continuum

Osteopathic Medical Schools matriculate students with a variety of academic skills and a wide range of career goals. The same is true for residency programs. Each osteopathic medical student (OMS) or medical resident experiences a unique developmental journey. Learners attribute much of their success and achievements to their ability to effectively study for, and subsequently pass, examinations. Medical school as well as residency exposes a subset of these students who are challenged in the new environment and experience failure, often for the first time in their life. Medical school administrators, program directors, faculty, and staff often dedicate a disproportionate amount of effort, resources, and time to support these struggling learners. This session is designed to inspire dialogue among novice and experienced faculty focused on useful approaches to identifying struggling learners earlier and options on how to create individualized interventions that mitigate the risk of future failure.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will review the evidence behind identifying, diagnosing, and intervening with struggling medical learners across the educational continuum.

  2. Participants will examine strategies to diagnose signs and/or profiles of learners experiencing difficulty and intervene in common case scenarios

  3. Participants, through interactive discussion, will formulate a framework for intervention and/or remedial deficits to support retention and success

Presenters:

  • Trish S. Sexton, MS, DHEd, A.T. Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine

  • Kim Peck, MBA, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine
