Med Ed Update - by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine

September 19, 2008

AACOM Welcomes Tyler Cymet, DO, to the Office of Medical Education
Tyler Cymet, DO, joined AACOM’s staff on June 1, 2008, as Associate Vice President for Medical Education. Tyler brings a superior background to this work, having spent the last 15 years overseeing residents in his role as Director of Osteopathic Medical Education at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore/Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. More recently, Sinai named him Section Head of Family Medicine. During these years, Tyler also maintained a general medical practice, serving some 2,000 patients.

Tyler joins Linda Heun, PhD, Vice President for Medical Education, to provide services and leadership to osteopathic medical education programs, with a specific focus on osteopathic graduate education and its links to undergraduate clinical rotations and continuing medical education.  He is assuming the role of liaison to AACOM’s Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles (ECOP), and works with Linda to support the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents and the Society of Osteopathic Medical Educators. He is building external relationships by providing osteopathic medicine’s input for Healthy People 2020, representing AACOM to the Army recruiting board, and representing AACOM and developing relationships with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Veterans Administration (VA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Tyler received his DO degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He fulfilled his internship with the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University (CCOM), and completed his Primary Care Internal Medicine residency at Yale University School of Medicine. He was honored as one of Baltimore Magazine’s “Top Docs” in 1997, 2000 and 2007, and in 1999 was recognized as Best Teacher at an Osteopathic Medical School by the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA).

AACOM Announces Medical Education Research Mini-Grants
AACOM’s Office of Medical Education is seeking proposals for medical education research mini-grants in one of three areas identified below.  While collaborative, multi-institution research studies are most appropriate for these question areas, this mini-grant could support a pilot study or serve as the basis for seeking matching funds at individual institutions.

(1)  Identification of effective practices in the development and assessment of the seven core competencies.

(2)  Integration of real-world experiences into training for the core competencies.

(3)  Identification of the unique benefits of osteopathic medical education.

Research Proposal Deadline:  January 5, 2009
Mini-Grants Awarded:  February 10, 2009
Project must be completed for presentation at the AACOM Annual Meeting in April 2010.

Grantees will be expected to communicate their research outcomes by either submission of a document for publication or presentation at AACOM’s annual meeting. Visit the AACOM website for more information.

AACOM Invites Proposals for 2009 Annual Meeting Session and Posters: Deadline September 26, 2008
AACOM’s 2009 Annual Meeting will address the theme “Preparing the Best Physicians for Tomorrow’s World.”  The program will be enriched by plenary speakers who bring national perspective to the theme and AACOM Council-sponsored sessions which inform and involve attendees in the important work of the many offices that contribute to effective medical education.  As osteopathic medical educators and administrators, your session and poster proposals will help us address this important theme. National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME) Seeks Nominations
AACOM’s National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME) was created to promote collaboration and excellence in osteopathic medical education.

The Academy is a community of medical educators who have met rigorous standards for membership.  The Academy is administered from within AACOM’s Society of Osteopathic Medical Educators (SOME). Membership in the Academy is earned and requires a five-year commitment to mentor and support educational excellence and scholarship in others in the osteopathic medical education profession.

The deadline for applications for the first group of NAOME fellows to be inducted at the 2009 AACOM Annual Meeting is January 15th. 2009.   Faculty members are encouraged to self-nominate for membership in the Academy, or may be nominated by their dean or chairperson.

Academy goals include:

  • Modeling and promoting teaching excellence throughout osteopathic medical education.
  • Fostering and valuing scholarship in teaching and learning that moves beyond excellent practice to the development of peer-reviewed educational products that are publicly available.
  • Fostering networking and collaboration among institutions of osteopathic medical education by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas about educational endeavors including teaching, evaluation, curriculum design and implementation, faculty development and educational research.

AACOM Seeks Scholar-in-Residence Applicants
AACOM is committed to the development of faculty and administrators for its growing education programs.  The Medical Education Scholar-in-Residence Program's purpose is to provide opportunities for faculty from the Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (COMs) to engage in focused study and develop competencies in medical education while working at AACOM's headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

This opportunity is designed for faculty and administrators with major responsibility for components of their school's curriculum: undergraduate, graduate, or continuing medical education (CME). Applicants must be nominated by their dean and together with the dean and department chair develop a proposal for study that will enhance both the local COM's medical education program and provide leadership to the greater osteopathic medical education community.

Future applications for the Scholar-in-Residence Program will be reviewed quarterly with deadlines of March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31.  Click here for more information or to apply to the Scholar-in-Residence Program.

Society of Osteopathic Educators (SOME) Grows
SOME is an open-membership society of osteopathic medical educators (faculty and staff) who are involved in planning and/or providing osteopathic medical education programs along the full continuum of osteopathic medical education. SOME seeks to include those involved in educational programs through the colleges of osteopathic medicine, osteopathic post-graduate training institutions (OPTIs), specialty colleges and continuing medical education programs.

SOME's mission is to promote the continuous collaborative improvement of osteopathic medical education.  Currently SOME has 450 members, including educators from every college of osteopathic medicine.
