SPECIAL EDITION

November 18, 2009

Greetings,

This special addition update has three purposes:  1)  to share with you the attached Professionalism Newsletter,  2)  to share with you the initial outcomes of the Carnegie Foundation’s update of their 1910 Flexner Report, and 3) to urge you to plan now to connect with a mentor in anticipating of your application for membership in the National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME).

1)       See the November issue of the Quarterly E-newsletter from the Competncy Based Medical Education Task Force of the Sociaty of Osteopathic Medical Educators.  Please contact me with items for future issues of this quarterly newsletter.

2)      At the recent AAMC meeting the three researchers associated with the Carnegie Foundation’s updated study of the state of medical education presented their findings.  They believe that their findings call for  another major shift in how we educate physicians.  See the PP slides that represent these findings -  posted on the Carnegie website at the link:  Educating Physicians: A Call for Reform and join SOME (signing up places you on the listserv) and participate in a lively conversation about  the outcomes and their implications.

3)      The deadline for application for the 2010 cadre of NAOME Fellows is January 15, 2010.  A current NAOME fellow is ‘connected’ to each COM and ready to provide mentorship as you develop your mini-portfolio which is the basis for application.  The focus and format is different from other portfolios you may be familiar with; making it valuable to understand the parameters and the materials you will gather and include well before the end of 2009.  Please contact me for further information and to be connected with the mentor for your school.  See the NAOME website for further information.

Best wishes for the upcoming holiday seasons!
