ECOP group photoThe Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles (ECOP) met September 17-19 at Lincoln Memorial University-Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM). Representatives from 23 colleges of osteopathic medicine were in attendance. 

ECOP Chair Dave Mason, DO, Chair of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM), led discussions on the recently revised Glossary of Osteopathic Terminology and the upcoming new edition of the textbook Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine. Members also covered various topics of interest for educators who teach OMM.

Michael Seffinger, DO, Chair of the Department of OMM at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (Western U/COMP), spoke to ECOP about the history of the “The Merger” between osteopathic and allopathic medicine that occurred in California; Dr. Seffinger recently authored a book on the subject.

The Society of Osteopathic Medical Educators (SOME) Steering Committee convened on October 5 at the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) in Chevy Chase, MD. SOME Steering Committee members include:

The group approved minutes from its April meeting and discussed many issues, including the AACOM Career Advising web site, the relationship between SOME and the National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME) and session planning ideas for the upcoming AACOM Annual Meeting.

AACOM’s President and CEO, Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, greeted Committee members and provided relevant updates, including additions to the organization’s strategic plan. Tyler Cymet, DO, Associate Vice President for Medical Education at AACOM, presented various topics for discussion, such as the role of colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) in regard to clinical rotations.

Upcoming Meetings

The following meetings have been scheduled in conjunction with the upcoming 114th Annual AOA Convention and Scientific Seminar and will take place in the Hilton New Orleans Hotel Riverside:

The Assembly of Presidents (AOP) will convene November 3 in the Jasperwood Room, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon.

The Council of Development and Alumni Relations Professionals (Dev-Alum) will convene November 3, 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm, in the Magnolia Room.

The Council of Fiscal Officers (CFO) will meet November 2 in the Fountain Room, 7:30 am – 1:00 pm.

The Council of Osteopathic Medical Admissions Officers (COMAO) will meet November 4 in the Jasperwood Room, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm.

The Council of Osteopathic Student Government Representatives (COSGP) will meet October 30 – November 1 in the Rosedown Room for its Fall Quarterly Meeting.

The Marketing and Communications Advisory Council (MAC) will convene November 2 in the Chart Room, 9:00 – 11:00 am.
