AACOM Names Pamela Murphy Director of Government Relations

The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) announces the appointment of Pamela Murphy, MSW, to the position of Director of Government Relations. She has served as Interim Director since August 2010, and previously was Assistant Director of Government Relations.

As AACOM’s Director of Government Relations, Ms. Murphy will work with the President to advocate the association’s congressional and federal policy positions, work with AACOM’s members and other associations to present unified health professions positions to policy makers, and monitor legislative and regulatory developments.

Prior to joining the association, Ms. Murphy served as the Government Affairs and Public Relations Specialist for the Allstate Foundation Program, where she spearheaded a public awareness campaign on the economics of domestic violence working with Members of Congress and federal officials, as well as providing outreach to media. Previously, she worked as a Senior Policy Advisor to a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, where she managed the Member’s health care agenda and appropriations process. 

Ms. Murphy has also worked at the Women’s Law Project in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has served as a policy researcher for the National Committee on Pay Equity in Washington, DC, and the Victim Services Center in Pennsylvania. 

Ms. Murphy obtained her Masters degree in Social Work and Social Policy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. 

AACOM also announces the appointment of Mary Lynn Bender as Senior Government Relations/Policy Specialist. In this role, Ms. Bender will work with Ms. Murphy on representing AACOM’s interests before federal government bodies and advocacy groups. Ms. Bender previously served as AACOM’s Editor and Public Affairs Associate, where she worked to maximize AACOM’s public communications and advocacy outreach on legislative and public policy priorities.

Prior to joining the association, Mary-Lynn worked for the Virginia Cancer Specialists, P.C., an affiliate of the United Network of U.S. Oncology. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in journalism from West Virginia University, and has worked as a news reporter and freelance writer, covering a broad range of issues.
