White House Issues Executive Order on Improving Access to Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families

Posted 9/7/12

  • In alignment with his commitment to improve and meet the current and forthcoming needs of military families and veterans as outlined in his 2011 report, “Strengthening Our Military Families,” President Obama signed an Executive Order on Friday, August 31, directing federal agencies to further expand mental health and substance abuse services and access for all veterans, service members, and their families. Key highlights include the following: the establishment of pilot projects involving community partnerships between government agencies and community-based providers in areas continuously lacking adequate staffing of mental health services; the establishment of the Interagency Task Force on Military and Veterans Mental Health led by the Secretaries of Defense, Health and Human Services, and Veterans Affairs to recommend to the President a strategic blueprint to improve current treatment services; and enhanced collaborative research among agencies to prevent, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
