In 2015, University Hospitals in Cleveland had several hospitals that were new to osteopathic medical education. There was an urgent need to establish a faculty development program to prepare the new community faculty physicians in both teaching and learning, as well as in developing scholarly activity.
In order to meet the scholarly activity needs at their osteopathic postgraduate training institute, Robert W. Hostoffer Jr., DO, FAAP, FACOP, FCCP, FACOI, along with his Allergy-Immunology Chief Fellow, Brian P. Peppers, DO, PhD developed an innovative research training program, Scholar Seven, that is now available to AODME members in a series of webinars.

With the transition to a single accreditation system, the importance of increasing scholarly activity has been highlighted among AOA-focused residency programs to ensure a smooth transition. Dr. Hostoffer and Dr. Peppers created the Scholar Seven program to assist AOA-focused training programs in need of increasing the scholarly work for their faculty members and residents in order to reach these requirements by 2020.
“At this time in the osteopathic history, we need to proceed to master scholarship,” Dr. Hostoffer said. “The Scholar Seven program provides a roadmap for scholarly work.”
The ultimate goal of the program is to facilitate change in an entire community hospital system’s environment by creating a self-replicating scholarly culture in a timely and cost efficient manner.
“When we look at the concept of research, the myth exists that scholarly activity is too complex for the average clinical physician,” Dr. Hostoffer said. “Physicians think they have to do something big like cure cancer and they just don’t have time. They look too far, too much rather than simplifying.”
The Scholar Seven program helps to identify and remove barriers that hinder and deter participants from pursuing their scholarly goals. Viewers are led into the scholarly process step by step and shown how to develop a hypothesis, create specific aims, preliminary data, materials and methods, and conclusions.
