New Academic Year; Focus on Continued Accreditation
For many of you, this month marks the beginning of the academic year, a time that can be exciting yet hectic. You may find some helpful tips and resources for you and your trainees in AOGME’s recent webinars on Developing a Wellness Curriculum and Recognizing Warning Signs of Burnout and Depression in Learners.
The AOA House of Delegates convened last week in Chicago, and the AOGME leadership also met for a two-day planning meeting to discuss new programs and initiatives for our members. During the House of Delegates, Dr. Boyd Buser and Dr. Thomas Nasca highlighted the progress in the transition to the single accreditation system. Dr. Buser cited that around 70 percent of AOA programs are now either ACGME accredited or have applied for ACGME accreditation. Congratulations to all in the process and for those who have reached initial or continued accreditation. For those in initial accreditation, we urge you to continue working on addressing any citations or areas of improvement in your program as you prepare for your next accreditation site visit. In response to the need to meet scholarly activity requirements among many of our programs, AOGME is hosting a series of educational webinars on research and scholarly work. The first webinar on developing a research question and conducting a literature search occurred in May and featured Dr. Mark Speicher, AACOM Senior Vice President for Medical Education and Research. Part II of this series on September 19 will examine quantitative methods in research. On August 8, Dr. Kimberly Wolf will address integrating research into osteopathic clinical practice. On October 10, we will host a webinar on researching and writing an effective background section of a research paper. If you are interested in showcasing your scholarly work and expertise at a national conference, please consider submitting an abstract to Educating Leaders 2019, the AACOM Annual Conference, April 10-13 in Washington, DC. With seven unique osteopathic medical education (OME)-related focus areas to choose from, this year’s program is designed to feature a broad variety of research, scholarly work, and educational or other best practices from across the OME continuum. In addition to the various AOGME events at the conference, an AOGME track will highlight GME-related sessions at the conference. Finally, for the first time, we will host a resident and fellows poster competition at the AACOM conference. Encourage your residents and fellows to submit an abstract.
By now, you should have received the AACOM GME Leadership Development Survey that was sent out to all AOGME members. We are currently exploring the development of a leadership program specifically for GME professionals and your input is critical to this process. Please respond to the survey by June 26.
