“As a teen, I really enjoyed the Cosby Show—the father, Cliff Huxtable, was an OBGYN. I paid careful attention to the way he interacted with his patients, particularly the way he soothed them with kind words, nonverbal gestures and humor. I remember thinking that being a physician looked fun, and I wanted to be able to help others in this way.

“The United States is becoming more and more diverse, making it imperative that physicians are trained to provide culturally sensitive, competent health care in a way that honors and supports each individual and family unit. I have had numerous rewarding experiences as a nurse practitioner, but I also encountered many challenges to optimally caring for patients who were looking for treatment modalities outside of the typical allopathic framework. So I chose to pursue a DO career to be able to offer patients a variety of treatment modalities to best meet their needs."
