Proposed Policy Changes to Section X for Public Comment
The AOA recently posted revisions to Section X of the AOA Basic Documents for Postdoctoral Training. These standards relate to the transition of AOA-approved programs to the single GME accreditation system. The proposed changes codify program eligibility for the 2019 AOA Match and ability to accept new trainees. The public comment period for these changes ends on Monday, October 16, 2017, please email comments to firstname.lastname@example.org. Learn more about the proposed changes.
Osteopathic Principles Committee Celebrates Recognition Milestone
During its last review committee meeting on September 8-10, 2017, the ACGME Osteopathic Principles Committee (OPC) marked the approval of its 100th program for Osteopathic Recognition. Notably, 111 programs have now received Osteopathic Recognition, to include programs that were previously ACGME-accredited only without an affiliation with the AOA. Programs that have received Osteopathic Recognition so far are in the following specialties: family medicine, internal medicine, dermatology, sports medicine, pediatrics, transitional year, internal medicine/pediatrics, geriatric medicine, pediatric sports medicine, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology, hospice and palliative medicine, and allergy and immunology.
Osteopathic Recognition is the key mechanism by which osteopathic principles and practices are incorporated within ACGME's accreditation system. AACOM's survey of third-year medical students indicates a strong interest among osteopathic medical students to pursue graduate medical training with an osteopathic focus.
