Educating Leaders through Education Excellence

Dear Colleagues,

We are a mere 75 days away from the Joint AACOM & AODME 2017 Annual Conference, to be held in Baltimore, MD, April 26-29. In the coming weeks, the conference planning committee—led by co-chairs Lisa Nash, DO, MS-HPEd and Isaac Kirstein, DO—as well as staff and leadership at both AACOM and AODME will be working hard to prepare the best possible event for our attendees, and it is with a great deal of enthusiasm that I shine a spotlight on some of the many exciting offerings you can expect to see this year.

Under the theme Educating Leaders for Integrated Health Systems: A Paradigm for the Future, this year’s conference will bring together respected members of the osteopathic medical education (OME) community and beyond to engage in discussion and collaboration focused on topics such as transformative innovations, functions, and challenges of a demanding and dynamic health care environment, as well as next-generation integrated academic health systems, graduate medical education (GME), faculty development, research and leadership, osteopathic entrustable professional activities (EPAs), and other high-priority topics important to OME and health professions education landscape as a whole.

Pre-Conference Workshops

This year’s program will offer something for everyone, and as AACOM members I strongly encourage you to embrace the Annual Conference experience and participate in as many of these sessions as possible.

On Tuesday, April 25, we will host three pre-conference workshops, each with a different focus suited to fit the needs of the many diverse facets of our membership:

  • The Training the Osteopathic Professions Core Educators (TOPCE) workshop will offer professional development and thought leadership on an array of faculty development topics.
  • The Osteopathic Recognition: Intensive Peer-to-Peer Workshop for Completing the Osteopathic Recognition Application is designed to provide intensive and tangible guidance on attaining osteopathic recognition from peers and experts who have gone through the process successfully.
  • Finally, the Implementing a New COMLEX-USA Master Blueprint & Enhancing the COMAT Program workshop is for deans, faculty, advisors, program directors, and other professionals involved in GME so that they may learn about and discuss new enhancements and changes to the COMLEX-USA master blueprint.

We will also launch our Senior Leadership Development Program (SLDP), which assists new and experienced deans, current, interim, or designated deans, and others identified by their schools as potential future deans to develop and enhance critical leadership and management competencies. Must-Attend Events

In addition to the many stimulating sessions and plenary presentations, AACOM will also be hosting several events during and in conjunction with the conference that are already generating some excitement.

On Wednesday, April 26, we will be holding the EPA poster review, where poster presenters will discuss how their AACOM member college is using EPAs to help bridge competency assessment along the continuum of undergraduate and graduate medical education. Later that evening, the AACOM Diversity Committee will be hosting a special reception to showcase the efforts of this group and highlight this important issue.

Other highly-anticipated events include the ED to MED town hall, to be held on Thursday, April 27, at 5:15 PM, and our annual AACOM Awards Banquet on Friday, April 28—a special evening where we shine a light on outstanding individuals from across our community. The Joint AACOM & AODME 2017 Annual Conference is an excellent opportunity to engage and collaborate with contemporaries and thought leaders, and also to immerse yourself in a program designed specifically to address the many prominent issues and ideas related to educating the future of osteopathic medicine.
