OME in the Press

dr-shannon-circleRecognized for his leadership in osteopathic medical education, AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, was recently interviewed by Osmosis as part of its “Leaders in Medical Education” series.

Following a recount of his background and career trajectory, Dr. Shannon reflected on the tremendous growth in osteopathic medicine during a Q&A session in which he provided insight to several relevant topics including:

  • Innovation at osteopathic medical schools, including schools’ allied health profession training programs that contribute to interprofessional education
  • Trends in applications to osteopathic medical schools and new recruitment strategies
  • The availability of graduate medical education (GME) positions
  • The single accreditation system
  • Student and physician wellness

Dr. Shannon closed the interview with a bit of advice for today’s medical students:

"My advice would be to prepare for a career in practice that is different than the clinical world in which they are training. The health care world is transforming, and they will be part of that change. The more they can be life time learners, the more they can be participants in that change and the stewardship of knowledge, the more they are able to collaborate with team members, patients, and communities, and the more they can work with other stakeholders, the better they will be renewed by the health care system of the future because they will be truly a part of its creation and performance."
